Rare Red Electrical Discharge Recorded in Skies

A team of photographers in New Zealand have successfully captured photographs of “red sprites”, counted as the most elusive light phenomena in the world, during which luminous crimson flashes become visible in the atmosphere.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

This group of artists began their evening to capture the night sky over the unique geological structures in the South Island of the country on a specific autumn evening, when they chanced upon the unusual spectacle.

They thought they would be blessed to get optimal conditions that evening, but their night turned into “a night to remember,” one photographer remarked.

While reviewing his photographs for a galaxy composite and found he had captured crimson electrical bursts,” the photographer noted. “We just could not believe it – it resulted in joyful noises and all sorts going on in the dark.”

Defining Red Sprites

Red sprites are bursts of electrical energy in the mesosphere, generated by electrical storms. In contrast to lightning that shoots towards the earth, the phenomena ascend towards the mesospheric region, producing shapes that look like vertical forms, carrots or even marine creatures. The first photograph of a such an event was recorded – unintentionally – in that year, by a group at the an educational institution.

Brief and Dreamlike Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – lasting just a millisecond – that they are seldom seen to the human sight, but a team member was fortunate. “I was coincidentally viewing directly at one when it happened – an ideal happenstance looking at the right part of the heavens and I saw a brief red flash,” he commented.

Witnessing the events was a goal for the photographer, an award-winning night scape photographer. “It seems that you are observing an unreal vision, it feels otherworldly … the color is a profound crimson that is present only momentarily, so it is fascinating to witness.”

Advanced and Artistic Mastery

Capturing a this phenomenon requires a mastery of advanced imaging techniques, as well as an knowledge about science and innovative thinking, the photographer explained. “It is a deeply engaging type of photography that’s highly fulfilling as well.”

One of the other individuals remarked it was one of the “most extraordinary nights” of his life. “I was able to observe the starry river glowing above the skyline while these massive crimson strands of energy danced above a thunderstorm at a great distance,” he said.

A One-of-a-Kind Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no additional photographs depicting red sprites and the galactic core from the southern perspective in a single image.

“It was one of those moments when you realize you are observing a phenomenon that may not recur in your lifetime.”
